The legislation within the Disability Discrimination Act that came into force in 2004, placed major responsibilities on service providers to take reasonable measures to ensure service users with a disability did not face barriers when accessing their premises.
Some years prior to the legislation becoming law, EDS had made a study to establish a sturdy methodology process to survey premises and perform an access audit. As a direct result of this study, they were awarded the contract by NPS Property Consultants to carry out audits on 13 infant, primary and secondary schools for the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.
EDS were awarded a contract to carry out access audits of three large hospital sites by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust. They prepared audits on Lancaster Royal Infirmary, Furness General Hospital in Barrow and Westmorland Hospital in Kendal and a comprehensive plan of action was put in place by the trust to greatly improve disabled access to their premises.
In 2004, Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust appointed the company as their preferred disabled access consultants to review the many sites where its services are delivered. They have now carried out in excess of 80 access audits and continue to advise the trust on matters regarding inclusive access.
